About the Study
What is this survey all about?
We want to learn how, when, where, and why people travel in and around Indiana. We’re asking you to log your travel to help us understand regional and statewide transportation patterns. By participating, you can help us plan for future transportation improvements in your community.
Why should I participate?
Your participation ensures that households like yours are represented in our transportation plans. Your input has a big impact because only a limited number of households are invited to participate in the survey.
How was I selected to participate?
Invited households were selected at random across the Central Indiana region.
Who is sponsoring this survey?
This survey is sponsored by the Indianapolis Metropolitan Planning Organization (IMPO) and the Heartland Metropolitan Planning Organization (HMPO; formerly the Madison County Council of Governments or MCCOG) and conducted by RSG.
Completing the Study
Who should sign up?
Please have only one household member complete the initial sign up survey for the study. Please do not share this code outside your household. Once your household is signed up, all household members need to participate in the survey to be eligible for gift cards. If using the app, please have all household members download the app and use the participation code that was emailed. If doing the one-day study, please answer for your entire household.
How much time does it take to participate?
It takes about 10 minutes to sign up for the study. Once you sign up, we’ll give you instructions for logging your travel and completing the study. Households that log their travel for seven days in the smartphone app, rMove, will spend about 5-10 minutes each day reporting their travel. Households that log their travel online or over the phone will spend about 10 minutes per household member reporting their travel for one day.
What do I get for participating?
You will receive a gift card once all members of your household have reported their travel and completed their surveys. If your household participates using the smartphone app (rMove), each participating adult (18 or older) will receive a gift card (e.g., a household with two adults receives two gift cards). Households that report their travel online or by calling in will receive a single gift card.
The survey is for legal residents of the United States, 18 years of age or older, who live in Central Indiana. Employees, clients, contractors, directors and officers of RSG, and their immediate family members and people living in the same household with them are not eligible. Not all completed surveys will qualify for an incentive.
LIMIT ONE INCENTIVE PER HOUSEHOLD completing the web survey or LIMIT ONE INCENTIVE PER ADULT (18+) completing the smartphone survey.
No substitution, cash redemption, or transfer of an incentive is permitted. If an incentive cannot be awarded for any reason, RSG reserves the right to substitute an incentive of equal or greater value. All federal, state and local taxes and all other costs associated with acceptance or use of any incentive, other than the initial shipping or delivery of the incentive to the winner, are the sole responsibility of the receiver of the incentive.
In the unlikely event RSG suspects the surveys or incentive entry mechanism or both have been tampered with, the payment of incentives will be discontinued until the integrity of the process is restored. If possible, RSG will place a notice on the survey website regarding any suspension and resumption of the payment of incentives.
What if I don’t travel much?
Any amount of travel (even if you don’t make any trips) will help us improve regional transportation planning. Don’t forget that short trips, such as walking the dog, count too. Deliveries to you, such as take-out or groceries, are also important.
What if my transportation habits during the survey aren’t my “typical” habits?
That’s no problem – we still encourage you to participate.
I was invited to use the survey smartphone app, rMove. How does it work?
After you download rMove and sign up, rMove will log your trips using GPS for one week while you go about your daily life. Each day you’ll be asked to complete a short daily survey about your travel habits as well as a trip survey for each trip you make.

What do I do if I never received my participation access code?
Please check your junk or spam folder. If you don’t see it there, please click here to contact us.
Why do you need to know my demographics, like race and income?
We want to confirm we are getting a true representation of all people living in the area. Analyzing how and where people travel can depend on certain demographic attributes and areas where they live or work. This information gives us a better picture of travel habits and how things can be improved in the future.
Can I remove a household member if they no longer want to participate?
Unfortunately, we cannot remove a participating household member once the signup survey is complete. This is a household study; therefore, we require all related adult household members to participate to get accurate travel data.
If I drive for my job (delivery, bus, rideshare driver, etc.), do I have to track all my trips?
The rMove app generates a trip survey for every trip you make. This can be cumbersome for participants who make trips all day long. You can turn off the app tracking during these busy work hours and turn it back on during your normal personal trips.
What if I’ll be out of town during some of my travel period?
If you are using the app, we encourage you to still participate in the week-long study if you will be in town for at least one of your assigned dates.
Why isn’t the app recording my trips?
- Whenever prompted, always allow rMove to run in the background. If you receive this notification throughout your travel period, that means the location services have been turned off and you need to grant permission again before rMove will continue collecting trip data.
- Restarting your phone may also reboot your location tracking.
- If your phone has missed trips you’ve taken, you can add one by entering a specific day in your travel period and clicking the “+” at the bottom right side of the screen.
- You can also add stops to an existing trip diary when asked, “Do you need to add any more stops along the way?”
Why don’t I have any surveys to answer even though I’m making trips?
- Your trip surveys should populate when you open the rMove app. If you still don’t see any trip surveys to answer, please restart the phone.
- If your phone still has missed trips you’ve taken, you can add one by going into a specific day in your travel period and clicking the “+” at the bottom right side of the screen.
- Whenever prompted, always allow rMove to run in the background. If you receive this notification throughout your travel period, that means the location services has been turned off and you need to grant permission again before rMove will continue collecting trip data.
How might using an Android device impact the functionality of rMove?
To ensure rMove is collecting all of your trips throughout your travel period, the app needs to run continuously in the background. Certain default features on Android devices can interrupt rMove’s functionality by shutting down all background running apps. Consider the following options to improve your trip collection experience on your Android device:
- Note: the method for completing each of these options varies depending on which Android device you are using. Consult your phone settings to identify how to do this for your specific device.
- Turn off battery optimization during your travel period, which can help prevent rMove from being shut down during the travel period.
- Some devices offer an option to lock or keep open particular apps under “Recent apps”, which can help prevent rMove from being shut down during the travel period.
- Whenever prompted, always allow rMove to run in the background. If you receive this notification throughout your travel period, that means the location services has been turned off and you need to grant permission again before rMove will continue collecting trip data.
- If your phone has missed trips you’ve taken, you can add one by going into a specific day in your travel period and clicking the “+” at the bottom right side of the screen.
When do I get my gift card?
Please allow 2-3 weeks for gift card processing after you have completed the study.
What do I do if I haven’t received my gift card after 2-3 weeks?
If you chose a digital gift card, please check your junk or spam folder. If you chose a physical, mailed card, please click here and provide your mailing address.
